Ein Geburtstag in San Francisco

Meine Flugkarten für Thanksgiving waren schon gebucht worden; ich fand etwas echt gunstig und fragte ob ich auch nach anderen Reisezielen mit dem Preis fahren könnte. Guckte und buchte sofort eine Reise nach San Francisco. Es war echt lange her dass ich meinen besten Freund sah.

Ich flog über 20 Stunden nach San Francisco über North Carolina. Mein Kumpel holte mich am Flughafen ab. Ich war erschöpft. Troztdem war es der Anfang einer schönen Woche in sonnigem San Francisco.

Wir kamen nach Hause und ich traf seinen Hund, Comet. Normalerweise habe ich keine Allergien; aber mit diesem Korgi ist meine Nase plötzlich verstopft. Er ist ein süßer Hund mit echt kleinen Beinen.

Mein Kumpel musste tags arbeiten, so ich lief um die Stadt, um meine Lieblingsorte wieder zu finden.

Ich hatte auch die Ehre, vier Stepptanzkurse mitzumachen. Ich brachte meine Steppschuhe mit, um mit meinem ehemaligen Stepptanzlehrer zu tanzen. Ich hatte viele Fragen an Unterrichten und Methode – Dinge was nicht ganz klar jetzt bei meinem derzeitigen Tanzhaus sind. Es war gut noch mal mit ihm zu unterhalten – er erklärte alles und dann erforschte ein bisschen mehr in meinem Leben. Die Themen war unbequem aber notwendig und wichtig. Warum sind jede Stepptanzlehrer auch ein Therapeut?

Mein Kumpel, wie ich, hat Wandern echt gern, so fuhren wir nord aus San Francisco, um eine Wanderung an der Küste zu machen. Über die Golden Gate Bridge fuhren wir, um eine schöne Strecke zu finden. Nebel, Bäume, Moos, … Schönheit.

Den nächsten Tag fuhren wir süd nach Paso Robles, um ein Weingut zu besuchen. Ich bin dort ein Mitglied seit Jahren und hatte einen Termin gemacht, um Wein zu kosten. Als wir dort saßen, sah mein Kumpel die Begrüßungskarte, die ‘alles Gute zum Geburtstag’ sagte. Er guckte mich an, “ist heute dein Geburtstag?” Nein, noch nicht… mein Freund… #Kopfgreifen

Nach unsere Woche zusammen mit Wandern und Brauen und Essengehen, tranken wir eine Flasche Wein an meinem letzten Tag – mein Geburtstag. Die Woche war echt gemütlich, und ich war/bin sehr dankbar für die Reise. Aber das Leben geht weiter in Erfurt. Ich hatte noch viel dort zu vollbringen.

When I arrived back in Germany, I was given the opportunity to help out at the cheese market that was being held at an outdoor museum in a neighboring village. I pounced on the opportunity to help out the people who provided me my first cheese internship. The plan was for me to help set up and take down. In the interim, I could help organize the product as well as find time to network and set up another cheese internship.

Despite the rain, set up went well. Not only did I have enough time in the morning to scope out the other cheese stands, but I also checked out the museum, which was a collection of local buildings from various eras. I had really enjoyed similar museums in Norway and Ireland; this museum was equally interesting.

Things were slow at the start, so the owner made her rounds and talked me up to a sheep cheese creamery. All I had to do was to go and introduce myself and hide my faults. Before noon, I had another cheese internship lined up! Success.

In the afternoon, the annual cheese market started bustling. I was organizing product when the owner, while chatting with an acquaintance of hers, pointed out that I was American. This woman, who up to the point was extremely talkative, went wide-eyed. She then whispered, “Really? I’ve never seen one in the wild.” Hearing this, I offered my hand and formally introduced myself. She commented that I was skinny for an American; I attempted to clarify that that was only a generalization…

Shortly thereafter, the owner needed a break, so she left me in charge. I had not planned on this, but was able to sell some cheese and make change and explain the different flavors and textures. I do not know if she realized how stressful it was for me to man the booth alone.

Having sold a lot of goat cheese, tasted a bunch of other local cheeses, and endured the rain, we packed up the truck and prepared to leave. It was then that I learned that the neighboring booths had been asking the owner how she happened to have a Dutchman working at her booth. When I first arrived in Germany, it was obvious that I was American; over time, many people assumed I was from England. As of this summer, I have officially jumped the channel. Perhaps one day I will be confused for a German…
